Bulldogs growl in hunt for Duals title

Bulldogs growl in hunt for Duals title

By Bruce Sayler

Butte High head wrestling coach Cory Johnston said he didn’t really know what to expect from the Bulldogs prior to their opening of the season on Friday. As it turned out, he guessed right about the expectations, he said. Butte High performed well.

The Bulldogs went 3-0 in pool competition the first day of the 34th annual Mining City Duals-Jim Street Classic high school wrestling tournament at Butte High School. The tourney is being held over two days and is using both of the school’s gyms. Action resumes at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals at 10:15. The semifinals are slated for 2:15 p.m. and the championship bouts are to begin at 6 p.m.

Butte High has advanced to the quarterfinals where the Bulldogs will take on the winner of the 9 a.m. meet between Billings Senior and Great Falls High. Billings West and the two Kalispell teams, Flathead and Glacier, also went undefeated Friday and nailed down spots in the quarterfinals. West will wrestle the winner of Ronan vs. Great Falls C.M. Russell, Flathead will vie with the winner of Billings Skyview vs. Belgrade, and Glacier will wrestle the South Fremont-Frenchtown winner.

Flathead is The Mining City Duals-Jim Street Classic defending champion, and is also the two-time defending state Class AA titlist. South Fremont is a mat power from St. Anthony, Idaho.

“We have two teams entered and the kids all wrestled excellent,” Johnston said. “We have a lot of young guys, but we also have some good veterans who do everything right.

“The tournament is for results, but, for us, is more about getting experience and as many matches as we can get. The young kids walked in there with no fear, as an expectation. They just wanted to be a part of it and they knew they have a spot somewhere. This is the first time in awhile we didn’t know what we had and with so much of a new lineup. It felt really good to see we had what I thought we had.”

The first unit won by scores of 75-0 over Missoula Hellgate, 51-24 over Gallatin High of Bozeman and 52-24 over Billings Skyview. The second team beat Missoula Sentinel 54-24 after losing by 48-29 to Belgrade and 60-15 to Great Falls High.

“Belgrade and Great Falls High are both really great teams,” Johnston said. “It was a tough way for our younger guys to open.”

The more experienced of the Bulldogs fared very well as recent West Liberty University recruit Mason Christian dominated in all three of his bouts, and both Kip Pumnea and Zach Tierney cruised to wins. Reid Whitlock also had a good day as a returnee, and Trey Hansen was strong in his. Kade Schleeman, Jake Bailey and Cohen Grunhuvd lent leadership as veterans to the second unit.

The Butte High No. 2 team will wrestle in consolation meets on Saturday with rounds beginning at 11:30 a.m. Pairings were to be completed in the morning prior to the tournament resumption.

“You could see the confidence growing in the young guys and now we’ll build on it,” Johnston said. “We’ll build on it for next week, or even tomorrow.”

The allowance of eighth-graders to wrestle for high school teams has put five more wrestlers on the Butte High rosters.

“One of them (Bode Hazlett), competed to day and went 2-and-1 at 132,” Johnston noted.
