Butte High’s tennis team will put their season on the line Thursday and Friday when they head to Helena for the Southern AA Divisional tournament.
There, the Bulldogs will take on Helena High, Helena Capital and Bozeman. The top four players in singles and doubles advance to the Class AA State tournament.
Action begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Friday’s play begins at 7:30 a.m.
Butte High’s best hope is in its girls’ team.
The doubles tandem of Sierra McGinnis and McKaul Ori started out the season with a bang to lead the Bulldogs. The team won its first seven matches of the season and figures to contend for a trip to state.
Aidan Amtmann and Molly Nelson weren’t a team until recently. Once together, they have played well. Last week, the duo placed second in the No. 2 division of the Helena Invitational.
Sydney Jennings and Jacee Sprunger will also play doubles for the Bulldogs. Molly Sprunger will team up with Jesslyn Valle.
Hannah Amtmann, Lakyn Ludwick, Carlee Johnson and Madi Jones head to divisionals after strong play throughout the regular season.
Butte High’s boys’ squad entered the season looking at a rebuilding year. That turned into steady progress as the season wore on.
Singles players Blake Casagranda, Marcus Madrazo, Tyler Ossello and Bret Bentley lead a talented, if unfinished boys’ team to the post season. All four players will be on the same side of the bracket this week.
Levin Mullaney and Andy Kelly have played particularly well of late in doubles. So have Tyler Reilly and Griff Warner.
Also, Seth Jaksha and Jake Williams will team together looking to do some damage. So will Dustin LaMiaux and Nate Scherman.
