Bulldogs bulldoze Wolfpack in Street Duals opener

Ornery.

That was the attitude Butte High’s wrestling team displayed in the opening dual of the 29th annual Mining City Duals Jim Street Classic Wrestling Tournament, which got under way Friday morning at the Butte High gymnasiums.

The Bulldogs came out with fire, rolling to a very convincing 51-21 dual win over Kalispell Glacier, igniting a partisan crowd at the Richardson Memorial Gym on the Butte High campus.

“Yeah, ornery,” Butte High head coach Cory Johnston agreed with a nod and a grin. “But what’s nice is to see that out of our young kids too. I think the [coaches’] personalities are rubbing off on them.”

Opening at 145 pounds, Butte senior Willie Anderson heard the whistle, shot a double, and finished off Glacier’s Adam Bartlett with a pin 59 seconds into the match. It happened just about that fast.

Not to be outdone, fellow Butte Senior Kadin “Red” Schonsberg followed the same script, only faster. Schonsberg took hold of Adam Hussein, took him to the mat and registered the 160-pound pin. The time? Twenty seconds.

“It was good to get started right in the middle of our lineup where we have a bunch of seniors,” Johnston said. “It was just like last year, only I think we might have scored more points this time.”

Bulldog 160-pound freshman Kameron Moreno needed a bit more time than the seniors, but the result in the team score column was the same. Moreno, who learns a little more about wrestling every time out, was on top of a back-and-forth battle with Andrew Glynn 13-11 when he ended the match via pin.

“A lot of these guys were pretty excited and came out pretty quick,” Johnston explained. “Kameron was exhausted after the first period, but he pulled it off. I think as the day goes on we’ll see them slow down and just wrestle.”

Glacier got its first team points when Sam Barber held off Butte sophomore Carl Anderson 3-0 at 170, followed by a Butte forfeit at 182 and a loss by fall at 205 by Butte sophomore Kyle Harding.

The Bulldogs got back on track with the bookends, as junior heavyweight Jeff Queer rolled to a first-period pin of Ashton Thompson and then Wil Queer posted a 6-0 decision over Dylan Miller at 103.

Butte freshman Scout Allen found out Thursday that he was wrestling varsity, and also that he needed to cut to 113 pounds. He made a good showing in his first varsity action, brawling to a 12-4 lead before pinning Jordan Meadows with just over a minute left in the match.

“I think Scout kind of made that kid pay for his cut,” Johnston said of the weight loss. “We have some athletic freshmen and we’re just teaching them week to week.”

Tyler Casey posted a quick pin of Caden Willis at 120 pounds, followed by a second-period stick recorded by Gabe Tierney at 126. Tierney had been at 113, but has shown an ability to battle at different weights.

Tyler Vetter picked up six points the easy way with a forfeit at 132, while Bryson Henningsen ran into a tough match at 138, where Justin Gibson registered the win by fall.
