Bulldogs boys fall short at Billings West

BILLINGS — For three quarters, the Butte High boys’ basketball team played right with Billings West Friday night at the Golden Dome.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the first quarter was all about the Golden Bears.

West jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first frame, and the Bears held off the Bulldogs for a 57-44 Eastern AA victory.

“The kids played extremely hard and executed much better than our previous few games,” Butte High coach Luke Powers said. “We spotted them 11 points early and then fought to get back into the game. I’m very proud of our effort, and we’ll continue to work hard.”

Cole DeVries scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter to lead the Bears. Jesse Owens joined DeVries in double figures with 11.

Owens scored six in the first half.

Clay Ferguson led the Bulldog charge in the second half. He scored all but two of his 16 points after the intermission.

Tommy Mellott scored 10 points for the Bulldogs. Kash Kelly added six, while Kale McCarthy scored four, Billy Kelly tossed in three and Lathan Ricketts netted two.

Butte High will play at Billings Senior Saturday afternoon.
