Bulldogs belt Bengals, fall to Bruins

HELENA — Butte High made a rare outdoors appearance for girls’ softball Saturday and came away with a split of a pair of non-conference Class AA road games.

The Bulldogs beat Helena High 7-3 before boarding their bus to cross town to Helena Capital, where they lost 12-3.

Inclement weather and wet grounds have limited the Butte High practices to a lot of gymnasium activity this spring with Saturday’s games marking the first regulation contests the Bulldogs have played this year. They competed in a jamboree of mini-games, four-inning matches, last Saturday in Missoula. Otherwise, the Butte High schedule to date, has been weathered out.

Getting to play a pair of games and gain some experience were the important achievements of the tilts in Helena, Ryan Stosich, head coach of the Bulldogs said Saturday.

“Overall, it was a good day,” he said, pointing to the dominance of sophomore pitcher McCaul McCarthy in the win over Helena High as a plus, and a big error in the loss to Capital as an example that work remains to be done in polishing the Butte High team for the nearing Eastern AA Conference season.

The Bulldogs are replacing eight graduated starters of a year ago this season and pointing toward playing in the state Class AA tournament, which is ticketed for Stodden Park at the end of May,  as the season progresses.

Stosich said cold temperatures welcomed the team to Helena in the first game. Nevertheless, McCarthy heated up with a 12-strikeout performance in an effort that offset nine walks. She had the Bengals’ batters off-balance and loose at the plate.

Senior third baseman Brittney Tierney led the offense with three hits in four at-bats, including a double, and two runs batted in. Junior second baseman Bradie Lester provided power with a double and a three-run homer while batting 3-for-4.

Butte High notched 12 hits as McCarthy chucked a three-hitter against Helena High. The Bulldogs’ defense was errorless despite the very limited field time the unit has seen.

Jaden Cleveland rapped two singles in the Butte High attack, which also included base hits by MacKenzie Tutty, Taylor Huff, Trisha Ericson and McCarthy.

Veronica Hansen homered for Helena High, and Mariah English absorbed the pitching loss.

The fielding and throwing, though good in the first game, were the culprits in the Butte High loss at Capital, Stosich said.

“Maddie (Skeel) pitched OK,” he said. “Eliminate those errors and we’re right in the game.”

Tierney and Huff both whacked doubles off the fence as the Bulldogs continued to hit the ball well. Aubree Corcoran clubbed a leadoff triple in the third inning to help Butte High close an early score gap to 5-3. Tutty also punched a hit.

“Costly errors sank our ship,” Stosich said. “We had a big error in the third inning with two outs.”

Huff knocked in two of the Butte High runs and Tutty drove in the other.

Nicole Ames pitched the win for the Bruins and also contributed a double and two runs batted in to the effort. Two Capital hitters, Jenna Priddy and Ally McMillan, went 4-for-4.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Missoula Big Sky on Monday in a rescheduled nonconference Class AA game. Stosich, though, said the weather forecast is not promising for it.
