Bulldogs Battle Through Rain, Win Two Elimination Games at State

The Butte Bulldogs didn’t get the state tournament run they envisioned.

What they did get was a test of resilience.

After opening the Class AA State Tournament against Gallatin on Thursday, the Bulldogs found themselves caught in a lengthy weather delay after just one inning of play. More than three hours passed before the game resumed at 3 Legends Stadium, disrupting momentum and creating an unusual start to the tournament.

When play resumed, Gallatin took control and handed Butte an 18-7 loss, dropping the Bulldogs into the elimination bracket.

The setback left Butte with no margin for error.

Twenty-four hours later, the Bulldogs returned Friday morning knowing their season would be over with another loss.

Instead, they delivered.

Facing Big Sky in a win-or-go-home matchup, Butte battled back for a dramatic 9-8 victory. Cayde Stajcar continued his hot tournament with another home run, while Troy Samson and Teagan Duffy each contributed multiple hits. Noah Powers gave the Bulldogs five strong innings on the mound before Evan McEwen came through in the clutch.

Trailing late, McEwen ripped a go-ahead two-run double that completed the comeback and kept the Bulldogs alive. He later shut the door from the mound, earning the victory and sending Butte into another elimination game.

The reward for surviving the morning was a matchup with Glacier later in the day.

The Bulldogs never let the Wolfpack get comfortable.

Butte exploded for eight runs in the second inning and rolled to a 14-4 victory. Kodye Kjersten and Teagan Duffy each drove in three runs, Calvin Cunningham reached base four times while turning in a strong start on the mound, and the Bulldogs showed patience throughout the lineup by drawing 11 walks.

Cunningham allowed just one run over four innings, while McEwen added another scoreless relief appearance as Butte piled up nine hits and cruised to its second victory of the day.

After enduring a rain delay, suffering an opening-round loss and facing elimination, the Bulldogs responded by winning two straight games and scoring 23 runs on Friday.

Later Friday evening, tournament officials announced the third-place game would not be played due to weather concerns, bringing Butte’s season to an end.

While the Bulldogs didn’t get one final chance to take the field, they left the state tournament with plenty to be proud of.

A team that could have folded after Thursday’s disappointment instead answered with grit, determination and two elimination-game victories. The Bulldogs fought until the very end, and when the tournament concluded, they did so coming off back-to-back wins.

Sometimes the measure of a team isn’t found in how it starts.

It’s found in how it responds.

The Bulldogs responded like champions.
