Bulldogs 10-run Billings Senior twice

The Butte High youth movement, overstated as it may be, is a popular trend with the Bulldog seniors on the girls’ softball team, it would appear.
Senior second baseman Ashten McCloskey said the same is expected of the three freshman starters as it is the rest of the squad and “as long as they’re performing I don’t mind having them on the team.”
She was especially happy with them Friday after an 11-1, 13-3 doubleheader sweep of Billings Senior at Stodden Park. Both games were ended in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule. The first game of the twin bill was an Eastern AA Conference counter while the second was a non-league contest.
Freshman pitchers Kaidy McClafferty and Kennedi Ferriter each went hurled complete games in leading the wins. McClafferty tossed a 10-strikeout three-hitter in the opener, which began the conference portion of the Butte High schedule. Ferriter not only pitched the second game, but was the shortstop for the first game and produced a day that also included errorless defensive play and a 3-for-5 first game with five runs batted in. The other freshman starter, right fielder Jenna Walker, hit a single in the first game.
“It helps when everybody is playing well,” McCloskey said about the confidence shown Friday by the team. “And everybody’s hitting the ball — the younger girls and the older ones. Kennedi played great defense and hit the ball, and Kaidy really pitched well.”
McCloskey batted 4-for-6 for the day with a double, an RBI and five runs scored hitting out of the leadoff spot.
“The girls came alive today,” head coach Ryan Stosich said. “They pitched well, hit the ball well and played defense well. Our defense picked us up.”
The Bulldogs were errorless in the field in game two after committing four miscues in the first contest. A good number of the plays they made were tough challenges, too, on a blustery day and with some hot ground balls.
“We were disciplined at the plate,” Stosich said about an offense that included 19 hits for the day. “We, as coaches, preach that to them all the time.”
Big hits included home runs by Justyce Connole and Amanda Spear and doubles by Ferriter and McCloskey.
“Everybody contributed,” Stosich said with a nod to the Bulldogs’ depth. “Whether it was coming in on defense, as a pinch hitter or as a baserunner.”
The Bulldogs, now 3-3 for the season and riding a three-game win streak, are scheduled to play two conference games on Saturday at Stodden Park, both against Billings West with the first slated for a noon first pitch.

Butte High scored all its runs in the first three innings as McClafferty shut the Broncs out until the fourth. Ferriter laced a bases-loaded single, scoring McCloskey and Connole, for a 2-0 Bulldog lead in the first.
Butte High loaded the bases again in the second as Walker singled to left, McCloskey drew a walk and Connole sped to first on a dropped third strike. Maria Michelotti brought home Walker with an infield hit and then McCloskey came home as Spear grounded out to second. Ferriter then smoked a double down the third-base line to knock in Connole and Michelotti and Butte High ended the frame with a 6-0 command.
The Bulldogs plated five runs in the third inning. Ellie Hoffenbacker walked and took second on a passed ball, then ran home an out later on a double to left field by McCloskey. Walks to Connole and Michelotti loaded the bases. After a fielder’s choice, Ferriter’s infield hit sent Connole across the plate. Bethany McLean then singled up the middle to score both Michelotti and Spear before Tristan Walks knocked in Ferriter with a single.
The Broncs loaded the bases with two out in the fourth and tallied their only run on a swinging bunt by Kristen McCarthy, bringing home Brittanie Fisher, who had singled to lead off the inning.
Neither team scored again and McClafferty nailed down the win with a one-two-three fifth inning, striking out Anna Paine and retiring Sarah Bonner and Fisher on consecutive groundouts to McCloskey.

Ferriter got Mercedes Bushard to fly out to Spear to end the game.
Ferriter struck out three and walked one while scattering nine hits to pick up her first varsity win.
