Bulldog wrestlers fly into holiday break

Butte High sticks it to Missoula Big Sky, 63-12

MISSOULA — Butte High closed out its pre-Christmas wrestling schedule by racking up another win in convincing fashion Tuesday night.

This time, the Bulldogs beat up on Missoula Big Sky, winning a Western AA dual 63-12. Butte High picked up the lopsided win while resting most of its No. 1 varsity wrestlers.

“The kids wrestled fantastic,” Butte High coach Cory Johnston said. “We’re wrestling a very physical style, and know we can trust our conditioning in right matches.”

Johnston said the Bulldogs wrestling Tuesday were not subvarsity wrestlers. Rather, the coach sees them as key pieces for the team that plans to make a push at the state tournament in a couple of months.

“It’s like I’ve been telling everyone, this is not a JV team,” he said. “It’s an extension of our varsity. We’ll continue to get these kids opportunities in big spots so they are ready in February when the rubber hits the road.”

The Bulldogs took advantage of three forfeits and racked up seven pins in their second victory over Big Sky this season. Butte also beat the Eagles at the Mining City Duals/Jim Street Classic.

Camron LeProwse (113 pounds), Grady Winston (120), Cole Worley (132), Gunnar Yelenich (138), Aiden Cuchine (160), Mason Christian (182) and Cohen Grunhuvd (205) racked up pins for the Bulldogs.

Bryton Hardesty won a 10-5 decision over Shawn Billingsly at 152 pounds. Bulldogs Tyrese LeProwse (103), Kyle Schonsberg (170) and Kade Schleeman (285) accepted forfeits.

Izzy Moreno (145) and Isaac Ayers (126) picked up pins for the Eagles.

The Bulldogs also registered seven pins in 10 extra matches wrestled before the varsity dual. Those matches included boys and girls.

Two of those pins belonged to Maria Hanson at 120 pounds. Two more came from Teya Edwards, who wrestled at 120 and 126. Aydin Gonzalez (113), Tanner Bair (126) and Trey Antonioli (132) also picked up pins for the Bulldogs.

Butte High’s next action is Jan. 4, when the Bulldogs head to the Capital City to take on Helena High and Helena Capital. The Bulldogs will compete at the Tom LeProwse Invitational Jan. 7-8.

This year, the tournament named after the Butte and Bozeman legend will include girls’ competition for the first time.
