Bulldog team goes 3-0 first day of Jim Street Classic Mining City Duals

By Bruce Sayler
Winning was probably the best positive of all for Butte High’s first unit of wrestlers Friday.
The Bulldogs were one of six teams to win pools and one of 12 to advance into the winners’ bracket for Saturday’s rounds of the 35th annual Jim Street Classic Mining City Duals high school wrestling tournament in the Butte Civic Center.
Butte High went 3-0 on Friday with wins of 69-0 over Helena High, 42-30 over C.M. Russell of Great Falls and 40-27 over Billings Skyview – all Class AA opponents. Butte High’s second unit scrapped and battled, but had the opposite result. The younger Bulldogs, also facing all Class AA varsity competition, fell 45-28 to Belgrade, 63-9 to Great Falls High and 39-33 to Missoula Big Sky.
“We have a lot of young kids, but were experienced,” Butte High head coach Cory Johnston said. “We have kids who have wrestled a lot in freestyle and so on. It’s hard to emulate varsity wrestling, but some of it was pretty good.”
It was good enough to put the Bulldogs’ first squad into a 9 a.m. Saturday dual meet against Gallatin High of Bozeman. The winner will meet Class A contender Ronan in a 10:15 quarterfinal. Other matchups in the 9 a.m. round are South Fremont of St. Anthony, Idaho, against Skyview, Billings Senior against Frenchtown and Columbia Falls against Belgrade.
In the quarterfinals, reigning state Class AA champion Billings West will wrestle the South Fremont-Skyview winner, Ronan will meet the Butte High-Gallatin winner, Great Falls High will go against the Billings Senior-Frenchtown winner, and two-time defending Mining City Duals champ Flathead will take on the Columbia Falls-Belgrade winner.
The semifinals are scheduled for 2 p.m. and the championship dual meet is set for 5:45.
Consolation division meets will be held throughout the day, beginning at 11:30 a.m., for the teams that did not qualify for the championship bracket. The Butte High second team will be in the field with Browning, Helena Capital, Missoula Sentinel, Havre, Missoula Big Sky, Bozeman High, Three Forks, Helena High, C.M. Russell of Great Falls, Kalispell Glacier and Missoula Hellgate.
Dual meets for third place and for fifth place are to be held at 4:30.
“We’re pretty consistent in the lower weights,” Johnston said. “Our upper weights are giving up size, but we’re not losing.
“We have a lot of kids doing a lot to make us as competitive as we can be.”
Johnston said turnout was in the low 50s with 24 of the prospects coming from the freshman class.
“It’s a good thing,” the coach said. “This group reminds me of the 2019-2020 team we had. They were a lot of fun and did well.”
Scout Allen, Quinn Sullivan and twins Kobe and Kameron Moreno were among the stars of the 2019-20 campaign.
Johnston said he liked the gameness of the second unit, though it was a much younger bunch that took its lumps on Friday.
“We gave them tough competition because we’re going to need them at the end of the year to stand up to it,” he said. “If we didn’t think they could handle it, we wouldn’t put them in there.”
Three freshmen and two eighth-graders were among the members of Butte High Team Two.
The first Butte High team’s journey into the winners’ bracket was led by 170-pounder Maverick McEwen and 285-pound limit weight class entrant Kade Schleeman. Both collected three wins by pin for the day. McEwen won a state title in Washington last year after two years in the Butte High varsity lineup. Schleeman, a fellow senior, has qualified for the state tourney three years.
Junor 152-pounder Will Stepan, a returning state placer, pinned two opponents Friday and won on a major decision for a 3-0 day as well. Keegan Hunt and Ryder McEwen each went 2-0 before moving up a weight class each and falling to bigger opponents. Three McEwen brothers were in the lineup with senior Maverick at 170, sophomore Ryder at 132 and 138, and eighth-grader Reveles at 113 and 120.
“The whole group stood out,” Johnston said of the entire Bulldog contingent. “It really was a good group effort. Now, we have to see how well they will hold up (Saturday).”
