GREAT FALLS — School records in relay races highlighted Butte High’s performance on the first day of the MHSA State Swim Meet Friday at the Swarthout Fieldhouse Pool.

Nicole Hyatt, Elsie Dickerson, Catherine Russo and Anna Trudnowski set the Butte High school record in the 200-yard freestyle race. The girls broke the old mark by a full second.

Not to be outdone, Riley Walsh, Trevor Komm, Matt Ingersoll and Zach Johnson set a pair of school records, in the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle.

The boys smashed the 200 record by 4 seconds and broke the 29-year-old record in the 400 by 2 seconds.

Individually, it wasn’t a bad day for the Bulldogs, either.

Russo, a sophomore who won two state titles a year ago, won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly in Friday’s preliminary races.

Johnson, a junior, placed third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free.

The top six finishers in each preliminary compete in Friday’s top finals and earn All-State honors. Those who place seven through 12 will race in the secondary finals and score team points.

Tournament officials did not release complete results for Friday’s preliminary races.
