The Butte High cross country team put on a strong showing Friday afternoon during the annual Purple and White race through uptown Butte.
Juniors Nic Raiser and Shannon Tempel finished first and second in the race that finished in front of a nice crowd at Naranche Stadium.
Raiser won the 3-mile race in 17 minutes, 7 seconds. Tempel, who was running for Butte Central this time last year, finished in 17:49. Kobi Craddock was next at 18:33. He was followed by Erik Casagranda at 19:14, seth Grant at 19:43 and Kyle Konda at 19:35.
“Nick and Shannon are really working hard in practice, pushing each other,” Butte High coach Mara Osborne said. “That’s good to see.”
On the girls’ side, Joby Rosenleaf and Cati Carmody led an impressive performance for the team.
Rosenleaf finished 19:46, while Carmody crossed the finish line in 20:55. They are the two runners returning who have significant varsity experience.
“Joby and Cati are right up there,” Osborne said. “They’re sophomores, so they know what’s going on. But they’re still really young.”
Sydney Pednergast was next at 21:30. She was followed by Abby Burke at 21:41, Mackenzie Joseph at 22:7 and Deryn Ferguson at 23:53.
Osborne pointed out that the team lost a strong class of seniors from last year. “We’ve got a young group of girls,” she said.
Both teams have potential for success in 2014, the coach said.
“We’re excited,” Osborne said. “They worked hard this summer and this as a good first test. We’re looking forward to the season.”
