GREAT FALLS — Butte High’s cross country runners posted some impressive times on a tough, hilly course at the Great Falls Invitational Friday at the Anaconda Hills Golf Course.
The meet featured a series of four triangular races. Butte High competed against Missoula Big Sky, Great Falls High and a handful of runners from Cascade. Results
“The kids had a tremendous day on a tough course,” Butte High coach Guy Wadas said. “I was impressed with how the runners attacked the hilly course. It really sets us up for the remainder of the season. The varsity boys and varsity girls ran in a nice pack and it will be critical for our success later.”
With senior Joby Rosenleaf leading the way, the Bulldog girls placed second in their race.
Rosenleaf placed second overall with a time of 21 minutes, 13 seconds in the 3-mile course. Makenna Edwards of Big Sky won the race in 20:11.
Big Sky topped the team standings with 26 points. Butte High scored 48, while Great Falls posted 51.
Rosie Real placed sixth for the Bulldogs in 23:23. Teammate Cati Carmody was two seconds behind in seventh place.
Katelyn Rapp (25:03), Gabby Haberman (25:08), Danika Murphy (25:53) and Taylor Huff (20:48) placed 16th through 19th overall.
On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs posted 55 points and trailed Great Falls (26) and Big Sky (51).
Sean Staples placed fifth in 18:21 to lead the Bulldogs. Teagan Olson of Great Falls won with a time of 17:06.
Kyle Konda placed 10th at 19:28, while Eric Casagranda took 12th at 19:45. Bulldog Jake Vetter placed 13th in 20:01, while freshmen Sean Foley (20:01) and Brok Martin (20:05) followed at 15th and 16.
Kasey Krzan placed 17th in 21:16.
Wadas also praised his subvarsity runners. Austin Gerry, a junior, made his season debut by placing 27th in the boys’ JV race in 19:33.
“We’re coming together,” Wadas said. “I think the kids are seeing it and starting to believe, too.”
Next up for the Bulldogs is the Mountain West meet next Saturday in Missoula.
