Bulldog, Maroon runners head to State meet

Butte High and Butte Central’s runners will close out the season Saturday at the Montanan High School Association’s 55th State Cross Country Championships in Missoula.

The event begins at 11 a.m. with the Class C girls’ race at the University of Montana Golf Course.

The Class AA girls run at 11:35 a.m. The Class AA boys run at 12:40 p.m. At 1:10, the Class A Girls, run. The Class A boys go at 2:20.

While Butte Central has just three runners, Butte High will send nine boys and nine girls to the meet.

Seniors Jake Vetter, Billy Cunneen and Zach Carlson lead the Bulldog boys. Cunneen and Carlson have been the top runners most of the season. Vetter emerged at the top after battling back from a knee injury suffered playing for the Butte High soccer team.

Also running for Butte High’s boys will be junior Sean Foley, freshman Trey Whitlock and seniors Andrew VandenBos and Xavier Black.

Sophomore Mikey Haldane and senior Clint Connors will make the trip as alternates.

On the girls’ side, Aubree Corcoran and Hailey Nielson will lead the Bulldogs after strong sophomore campaigns.

Also running for Butte High are sophomores Kyla Felix and Ida Real, senior Gabby Haberman, freshman Pieper Joseph and junior Helena Schoonen.

Senior Taylor Huff and junior Katelyn Rapp are Butte High’s alternates.

Sophomore Savannah Parks is the lone runner for the Maroon girls. Junior Jayden Mitchell and sophomore Asa Little will run for the BC boys.
