Bulldog, Maroon mat men hunt state berths

Butte High and Butte Central wrestlers will put their season on the line Saturday when they hit the road looking to book trips to next week’s All-Class State tournament.

The Bulldogs are sending 24 wrestlers to the Western AA seeding tournament that begins at 11 a.m. Helena High School. The Maroons, meanwhile, will send three grapplers to the Western A Divisional tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. in Ronan.

Each tournament will see the top eight in each weight class move on to state, which is next Friday and Saturday at MetraPark.

Head coach Cory Johnston’s Butte High team is two deep in 11 of the 13 weight classes. Defending 205-pound state champion Kameron Moreno is the lone Bulldog at that weight class. Moreno wrestled at 182 pounds and heavyweight (285 maximum) this season.

Fellow senior Kobe Moreno will wrestle at 285 pounds along with freshman Zach Tierney. Myles McClarnan and Logan Christian are entered at 182 pounds.

Brothers Trey and Reid Whitlock will compete at 113 pounds for the Bulldogs. Kyler Raiha and Cowhen Houchin are entered for Butte at 113 pounds, while Keagan Gransbery and Kip Pumnea will wrestle at 120.

Gransbery placed third at state last year at 113 pounds.

At 126 pounds, Gavin Vetter and Aidan Pezdark will represent the Bulldogs. Connor Konda and Aiden Tierney will battle at 132, Scout Allen and Wiley Dallaserra will go at 138, and Jerek Rosenleaf is the long Bulldogs at 145 pounds. Anthony Liva and Tucker Tucker LeProwse will battle for Butte High at 152 pounds.

Quinn Sullivan and Dylan Averyt are set at 160 for Butte High, and Dominick Scown and Riley Downey will wrestle at 170.

Butte Central’s Gunner Yelenich at 120 pounds and John Crossman at heavyweight are coach Robin Moodry’s best hope in Ronan.

Freshman Logan Dubois will compete at 126 pounds. He joined the team after the Christmas break.
