Bulldog girls take lead at State AA golf

GREAT FALLS — Butte High’s girls’ golf team took the first-day lead at the Class AA State golf tournament Monday at a very windy Meadow Lark Country Club. (Girls results; Boys results)

The Bulldogs hit a 356 as a team to take a six-shot lead over three-time defending champion Bozeman. Helena High is third at 366.

Bulldog junior Ella Prigge led the way for Butte High with an 82. That puts Prigge in third place behind Billings West’s Carrie Carpenter (75) and Kalispell Flathead’s Marcella Mercer (79). Bozeman’s Cooper Knarr is fourth at 85.

Butte High placed third at the State AA tournament last year in Butte. The Bulldogs have not won a state title since capturing back-to-back crowns in 1984 and 1985.

In all, Butte High has four players sitting in the top 15 heading into Tuesday’s final round. The top 15 place winners earn All-State recognition.

Butte High junior Kennedy Lean is tied for 11th at 90, while sophomore Kodie Hoagland, who earned All-State honors a year ago, sits at 14th place with a 91. Senior Grace Luoma is tied for 15th at 93.

Junior MacKenzie Finnegan shot a 103. The top four scores factor into the team score.

On the boys’ side, Butte High senior Kaven Noctor, an All-State player a year ago, sits in third place after a 79. He trails only Bozeman brothers Justus and Jordan Verge.

Justus Verge leads the way after hitting a 1-under-par 71, Jordan Verge carded a 74. Eli Groshelle of CMR is third at 81. Four players are tied for fifth at 82.

Bozeman shot a 309 to take a commanding lead in their quest to repeat as champions. Missoula Sentinel is a distant second at 346, one shot better than Helena Capital.

Butte High is in ninth place at 370.

Senior Hunter Salcido shot an 89 for the Bulldogs. Freshman Jack Prigge hit 94, while senior J.T. Sullivan hit 108 and senior Ty Insko hit a 111.
