Bulldog girls roll to victory, boys tie Big Sky

On a day when the Butte High girls’ tennis team beat Missoula Big Sky 8-0 and the Bulldog boys tied the Eagles at 4, Bulldog coach Mavis Bentley said the winner of the match was obvious.

“I think the wind won,” Benley said. “That was horrible.”

Gusting winds ruled the day that saw doubles action take place at Stodden Park and singles play held on the refurbished courts at West Elementary School.

Bentley said her girls’ team used its smarts while playing in the nearly unplayable conditions.

“They got smart, they got the ball in and let them make mistakes,” Bentley said.

Molly Nelson, Hannah Amtmann, Madi Jones and Jacee Sprunger won in straight sets on the singles side.

McKaul Ori and Sierra McGinnis, the No. 1 doubles team for Butte High, won in straight sets, as did the doubles teams of Carlee Johnson and Sydney Jennings and Janae Valle and Caitlyn Sheehan.

Molly Sprunger and Lakyn Ludwick won the match of the day. After winning 6-1 in the opener and falling 6-3 in the second set, the Butte No. 2 team overcame a 3-0 deficit for a 6-3 victory over Shayla Johnson and Samantha Ormesher.

Bentley pointed out that the Eagle girls were playing without their top singles player and top doubles team.

Butte High’s boys also played shorthanded because of injuries and illness. The Eagle boys swept the singles matches, while the Bulldogs swept the doubles matches.

Andy Kelly and Nate Scherman, the No. 1 doubles team for the Bulldogs, won in straight sets. Brett Bentley and Marcus Madrazo also won in straight sets, as did Jordy Nordstrom and Mike Hogan.

Bahin placed fourth at State last season.

The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday at the Five B’s meet in Bozeman.
