Bulldog girls roll into Divisional semifinals

GREAT FALLS — Butte High’s girls made it look easy Thursday afternoon at the Western A Divisional basketball tournament.

Seniors Ally Cleverly and Aspen Lovshin combined to score 40 points, and the Bulldogs beat Billings Skyview 66-38 in a first-round game at the CMR Fieldhouse. (Stats)

Butte High (15-4) will play Great Falls Russell (3-16) in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal game. CMR upset Bozeman 34-25, sending the Hawks (12-7) to the loser’s bracket.

In the early game, Great Falls High beat Billings Senior 27-19. The Bison will play top-seeded Billings West in Friday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal.

While the game was close for the first 4 minutes, it quickly got away on the Falcons.

Aspen Lovshin scored nine points in the first quarter, and Butte High quickly turned a 6-4 advantage into a 19-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Butte High led 40-12 at halftime and 62-25 after three quarters. The fourth quarter ran quickly with the clock running continuously because of the Class AA mercy rule.

Cleverly sank four 3-poiners and scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs. Lovshin scored 14 of her 19 in the first half. She hit three 3-pointers.

As a team, Butte High hit 10 3-pointers, with senior Brittney Tierney and juniors Makenna Carpenter and Trisha Ericson also dialing in from down town.

Tierney scored nine points in the victory. Carpenter knocked down seven. The Bulldogs also got five from Ericson, four from McCaul McCarthy, three from MacKenzie Tutty and two apiece from Justise Birkenbuel and Grace McGrath.

Haley Herron started and was a force for Butte High in the win as well.

Kaitlyn Hansel came off the bench to score 13 to lead the Falcons (1-18), who head to loser-out play. Brooke Barry added seven points, and Bella Bryan tossed in six.

Butte High is now one win away from qualifying for the Class AA State tournament, which is next weekend at the Butte Civic Center.

The Bulldogs haven’t played at state since 2013.
