Bulldog doubles teams go down fighting at State

HELENA — Call it a season for the Butte High tennis teams.

Seniors McKaul Ori and Sierra McGinnis won two matches before bowing out of the Class AA State tournament Thursday.

Tyler Reilly, a Butte High senior, and his sophomore doubles partner Brett Bentley won one match before being eliminated from the tournament.

Ori and McGinnis, a doubles combo the past two seasons, opened the tournament with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kalispell Glacier’s Kali Mathison and Amber Hamblin.

A loss in the quarterfinals was followed by a win in the second round of the consolation bracket. Then, the team fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to Helena High’s Jenna Starke and Ashley Battershell-Corson.

“We were down 0-3 in the second set and came back to tie it,” Butte High coach Mavis Bentley said. “They never gave up.”

Brett Bentley and Reilly wend down in the opener against Eastern AA champions Joe Sawatzke and Daniel Alme of Billings West 6-0, 6-2.

The Bulldog boys battled back for a consolation round before seeing their season come to an end with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss to Missoula Sentinel’s Michael Hewitt and Sean Ramsbacher.

The trip to state was the first for Ori, McGinnis, Bentley and Reilly.
