Bulldog boys’ soccer team eyes state tourney berth

The Butte High boys’ soccer team is 80 minutes away from the state tournament.

The Bulldogs will take on Great Falls Russell in an Eastern AA playoff game at 3 p.m. Friday at the Jeremy Bullock Complex. The winner advances to next week’s Class AA State tournament in Kalispell. The loser is done for the season.

Butte High (7-5-2) earned the No. 4 seed in the Eastern AA with a 6-4-2 mark. The Rustlers are the No. 5 seed.

Butte High beat the Rustlers 4-1 in a rough Sept. 29 battle that saw CMR draw three yellow cards. The teams battled to a scoreless tie in a match shortened by lightning earlier in the season in Great Falls.

The Bulldogs were in contention for the top spot before dropping three straight home games to close out the regular season. Those losses came to the top three teams in the Eastern AA, Bozeman, Billings Senior and Billings West.

Bozeman and Senior claimed the automatic berths into the state tournament.
