Today was senior day for the Butte High Bulldogs soccer program on an absolutely gorgeous fall afternoon.
Seniors Riley Doyle, Zane Fredlund, James Hadley, Hunter Holms, Eddie Kazmierczak, Cooper McKee, Joe Schrader, Bridger Schutte, Cameron Tobiness, and Reid Whitlock were honored with their parents at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
The Butte High Bulldogs battled last season’s state runner-up Glacier Wolfpack to a 2-2 tie.
The Bulldogs were first to find the net on a Jack Luoma goal assisted by Boyd Dewitt. Harrison Sanders answered right away for Glacier and the game was tied 1-1 at the half. Glacier out possessed Butte in the first half but both teams had numerous chances to score.
Harrison Sanders brought Glacier ahead on his second goal shortly into the second half. Glacier held the narrow lead until under 2 minutes in the game.
The ball went back and forth with both teams having equal chances to score until Butte High benefitted from a Glacier hand ball inside the penalty box. Boyd Dewitt scored the penalty kick for the Bulldogs to bring the game to the final 2-2 score.
Coach Carpenter shared, “today was an emotional day for me. I’ve coached these seniors for 4 years and love each of them like they are my own. It will be hard to let 10 such great young men move on but that’s my job as coach–raise them up and send them out to make a difference in the world. They played so hard, and I’m so proud of them.”
“In my time as coach, we have never even scored a goal on Glacier. To score twice today shows that we are playing inspired soccer. We emphasized “tenacity” this week in practice, and we saw that on the field throughout this game.”
