BOZEMAN – Butte High wound up with seven place-winners and sixth place in the team standings in the annual Tom LeProwse Memorial Invitational high school wrestling tournament boys’ competition, completed on Saturday.
The Bulldog girls placed 11 individuals and second as a team in their competition, mentioned in a separate article.
Billings West totaled 180 points to grab the boys’ team championship. Great Falls High was second with 168 and Belgrade third with 164. Butte High placed sixth in the 30-team field with 142 points, two points behind fifth-place Helena Capital. Billings Senior held down the fourth-place spot with 160.
Mason Christian was the Butte High boys’ highest place-winner, having to settle for second place in the 205-pound class after forfeiting the championship match because of injury. Brendan Lockart of Great Falls High placed first in the class.
Two Bulldogs placed third with Kip Pumnea claiming the spot at 132 pounds, and Zach Tierney in the 285-pound weight class. Pumnea lost in the semifinals, but bounced back in the bracket to finish with a 2-minute, 12-second pin of Livingston’s Trae DeSaveur.
Tierney also lost in the semifinals and rallied back to take third place on a 4-2 decision over Hudson Wiens of Bozeman.
Keegan Hunt earned a fourth place at 103 pounds for Butte High. He pinned Roddy Wyant of Anaconda in 5:09 in the quarterfinals, lost on a 5:01 pin to Tristan Vladic of Billings Senior in the semifinals before n qualifying for the third-place bout. There, he was outscored 14-10 by Gabriel Whiting of Powell, Wyoming, in action-packed match.
Three Bulldogs placed sixth – Ryder McEwen at 113 pounds, Cohen Grunhuvd at 205 and Kade Schleeman in the 285-pound limit class.
