GREAT FALLS — The Butte High boys’ soccer team picked up another win Saturday, beating Great Falls High 1-0 in an Eastern AA match.
The victory which put the Bulldogs at 7-2-2 overall and 6-1-2 in Eastern AA standings, wasn’t quite like the score might indicate, however.
“We played great,” said Butte High coach Eric Zahler, whose Bulldogs beat the Bison 3-0 earlier this season in Butte. “We outshot them 27-3. We controlled, I would say, 80 percent of the possessions. We just had a lot of issues finishing.”
The Bulldogs finally got the lone goal of the game at the 65th minute when Kyle Rauch knocked in a shot off an assist by Eric Todd.
Zahler said his team did a great job staying focused and not getting frustrated when the goals weren’t coming.
“They just kept staying positive, moving the ball, keeping everybody in the game,” Zahler said.
The low-scoring affair came after the Bulldogs busted out with 12 goals over the last two and a half games. Zahler credited his captions, Brock Powell, Travis Williams and Zach Archibald, for the team keeping its cool.
“We’ve been tested in many ways this year,” Zahler said. “Our guys keep rising to the challenge.”
The Bulldogs, who are still in control of their own destiny as far as finishing in the top two in the Eastern AA and receiving an automatic berth into the state tournament, play Billings West and Billings Senior at home Friday and Saturday.
Butte High’s junior varsity boys also picked up a victory Saturday. The Bulldogs improved to 4-1-1 with their second 5-0 win over Great Falls High this season.
The Bulldogs also beat Great Falls Russell 4-3 twice. Butte High’s lone loss came to the Bozeman JV. The team battled to a scoreless tie with Bozeman’s frosh team.
The Bulldogs have two games left, against the Bozeman teams.
