GREAT FALLS — The Bulldogs are undefeated when it counts.
Following an 0-12 regular season, the Butte High boys’ soccer team knocked off Great Falls High in a 1-0 battle Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
“We put it all together,” Butte High coach Erik Roth said. “It was a dog fight. It was a fun game.”
The Bulldogs will head to Billings Friday for a playoff match with No. 3 seed Billings West. The winner of that battle heads to the Class AA State tournament in Missoula.
Butte High junior goalkeeper Logan Roepe picked the perfect time to pitch his first shutout of the season.
“A shutout is always good,” Roth said, “especially when it’s 1-0.”
Sophomore Colton Case assisted on senior Justin McNabb’s second goal of the season with 13 minutes left in the match for the lone goal of the day.
Seniors Trevyn Roth and Russell Park were key as the Bulldogs controlled possession much of the battle.
“We controlled the middle,” coach Roth said before singling out the 5-foot-8 Case. “Colton Case, he played bigger than he is.”
The victory came after the Bulldogs fell 4-1 and 1-0 to the Bison in the regular season.
Coach Roth said his team focused on improving each week until the playoffs came along.
“We wanted to have our guys put it all together in the postseason,” the coach said. “Today they did.”
Roth added that his team competed in two losses to West in the regular season. He said his Bulldogs will hit the road with a ton of confidence on their side.
“The kids have a lot more bounce in their step right now,” Roth said. “It’s funny how a win does that.”
