Bulldog boys head to Bozeman

Ignore the records.

The Butte High boys’ basketball team is 32 minutes away from securing a spot in next week’s Class AA State tournament in Great Falls.

Standing in the way are the Bozeman Hawks, who will host the Eastern AA playoff game at the Bozeman High School gym.

Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m. (KBOW 550 AM. Listen live.)

Bozeman placed third in the Eastern AA standings with an 8-4 record. The Hawks are 12-8 overall.

Butte High is the No. 6 seed after finishing the regular season at 2-10 and 4-16. The Bulldogs enter the postseason coming off Friday’s Senior Night victory over Billings Senior.

Dallas Cook scored 21 points to lead the way as the Bulldogs knocked off the Broncs 73-68 at the Butte Civic Center.

Peter Granger and Cory Farstveet scored 14 points in that win.

The Hawks swept the season series with the Bulldogs, winning 81-39 Jan. 31 in Bozeman and 69-52 last week in Butte.

Bozeman coach Wes Holmquist said first-year head coach Terry Hauser’s Bulldogs were a “completely different team” the second time around.

Cook averages a team-leading 13.5 points and just under 10 rebounds per game to lead the Bulldogs. He reached double figures score in 16 of Butte High’s 20 games.

Granger scored at least 10 points in three straight games, while Farstveet, Brian Smith and Killian O’Leary posted double-digit games for the Bulldogs.

Zach Bunney runs the show at point guard, while Jake Dennehy has nine games under his belt after rejoining the team. Dennehy thought he’d miss the season with a shoulder injury suffered during the football season. Kyle Peterson has been a force who plays mostly off the bench.

Oliver Carr averages just under 19 points per game to lead the Hawks. He scored 23 points in Butte last week.

Caleb Weidenaar and Riley Malott, who was tied with Cook with an average of 9.3 rebounds per game in the last updated Class AA stats, scored 12. Bozeman opened and closed the game with 13-2 runs.
