The Butte High boys’ golf team made a little history Friday at the Butte Country Club.
The Bulldogs also might have sent a memo to the rest of the state that they are legitimate contenders.
Butte High’s boys fired a sizzling 296 on their home course, and the Bulldogs surged to the team title at the two-day tournament that started Thursday at the Old Works in Anaconda.
The 296 is a school record for the Bulldogs, who shot a 607. Kalispell Flathead shot a 297 on the final round to place second at 617.
Three Butte High golfers finished in the top 10. Flathead’s Ryan Keenan followed Thursday’s 71 at the Old Works with a 1-under-par 69 for a 2-under 140 total. Bozeman, the first-day leader, shot a 314 on the final round to place third at 619.
Bulldog Houston Green shot a final-round 70 to place second at 146. Missoula Sentinel’s Blake Hasquet took third at 151.
Butte High’s Trey Hoagland tied for fourth at 151 after a final-round 72. He took sixth after a scorecard playoff. Will Hoagland took ninth at 154 after Friday’s 74.
Also, Isaiah Weldon shot 79 and finished three shots out of the top 10 at 157. Eric Fogerty matched 81s for a 162.
Tyge Yelenich led BC, which shot a 340 for a 724 total. Yelenich improved 10 shots for a 74 and a 158. Also, Cameron Johnson hit an 84 for a 177, while Tyler Kump (90), Sam Joyce (92) and Frank Dwyer (97) all improved on the second day.
Zach Hanni and Marcus Lynch both shot an 84 to lead Butte High’s subvarsity golfers at 173.
On the girls’ side, Butte Central’s Tricia Joyce, a freshman, followed an 86 with another 86 for a 172 and fourth place. Kalispell Glacier’s Teigan Avery shot a 72 and won the tournament with a 153. Bozeman’s Hannah Rosanova took second at 160, while Hamilton’s Sydni Rose shot 1717.
Butte High’s Alexis Williams followed a 90 with a 93 for a 183 and eighth place.
Sadie Starcevich (218), Katelyn Alley (224) and Kelliann Neary (246) also played for Butte High.
