Bulldog boys ace Eagles on Fort Missoula courts

MISSOULA — The Butte High boys’ tennis team picked up a 6-2 victory over Missoula Big Sky on a hot Thursday afternoon and evening at the Fort Missoula Courts.

The Big Sky girls knocked off Butte High, also by the score of 6-2.

“It was a hot, long day,” Butte High coach Mavis Bentley said. The matches, which were all played on just four courts, began at 12:30 p.m. and ended around 7:30.

Butte High’s boys got singles wins from Erik Casagranda and Braden Loyola.

The match of the day went to Bulldog No. 1 doubles team Brett Bentley and Alex Kober. The top Bulldog duo edged Ino Caina and Jack Hall 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted about 2 and a half hours.

“It was fun to watch,” coach Bentley said. “That was just the second time Brett and Alex played together. It was a good win for them.”

The other three Bulldog doubles wins came in straight sets. Dyllan Lane and Riley Walsh won at No. 2, while Connor Stanghill and Erik Rosa won at No. 3, and Zach Johnson and Andrew Kober won at No. 4.

Coach Bentley praised the play of No. 1 singles player Tyler Ossello, who is coming off an illness. Butte’s John Berryman lost a 6-0, 3-6, 10-8 thriller to Brady Tabish at No. 4 singles.

Hannah Amtmann picked up a monstrous win at No. 1 singles on the girls’ side. She beat Ashley Luu 6-3, 7-5.

“Hannah played great,” Bentley said. “The girls she played plays year round in doors, and she was right there with her.”

Butte’s other win on the girls’ side came from Haley Boyd and Caitlyn Sheehan, who were straight-sets winners at No. 2 doubles.

Bentley was pleased with the play of Madi Jones and Jacee Sprunger, the Bulldogs’ No. 1 doubles team. They fell 6-3, 7-5 to Samanth Ormesher and Shayla Johnson.

“They’re getting it,” Bentley said of her top doubles tandem. “They’re getting their angles down. They’re getting their shots down.”

Bentley pointed out that Devin Amtmann and Riley Duffey nearly pulled out a big win at No. 4 doubles. They fell 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 to Ashley Du and Betta Lyon Delsordo.

“They’re freshmen,” the coach said. “They’re playing well, and they’re getting it.”

The Bulldogs will be busy next week.

Butte High will head to Bozeman on Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday they’ll take on Missoula Sentinel and Hellgate. On Thursday, the Bulldogs will play the Helena schools in a match that was moved from Saturday in Butte because of Bozeman’s prom.

Butte High will then play next Friday at Great Falls.
