Bulldog bats belt out 20-3 win over Knights

By Bruce Sayler

Stacking runs did fluff the cushion for Butte High Thursday. The Bulldogs, looking more comfortable on the field then they have in prior games, crushed the ball and Hellgate, beating the Missoula school 20-3 at Stodden Park in a Western AA Conference high school girls’ softball game.
Senior pitcher Rian Ferriter turned in a five-inning three-hitter with the game ending on the 10-run difference rule. It could have finished half an inning earlier when Butte High built its lead to 15 runs, 18-3, but Hellgate opted to push on to the fifth and take an extra turn at the plate.
A lightning flash delayed the continuation of the game for 30 minutes in the fourth inning.
Junior center fielder Taylor Drakos belted a three-run homer during a 5-RBI performance and freshman left fielder Ally Godbout batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Bulldogs collected a dozen hits. Ferriter helped herself with a home run and her sister, sophomore catcher Gracie Ferriter, banged out two doubles.
“We played well,” Butte High head coach Ryan Stosich said, agreeing it was the Bulldogs’ best defensive game of the year. “I think we’re coming along. We need to get on the field more. We need more reps.
“I think the girls looked more comfortable out there, today.”
The win gave Butte High a season sweep of the winless Knights. The Bulldogs beat them 31-2 in Missoula last month.
Thursday’s game was even for 2 ½ innings. Butte High entered the bottom of the third deadlocked 3-all with Hellgate. The Bulldogs had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Gracie Ferriter doubled home Kamber Leary, who had singled, and then ran home on a wild pitch.
Hellgate tied the score in the top of the second on a bases-loaded error. Ally Godbout led off the Butte High second with a single up and go to third base when the hit scooted past the Knights’ outfield. She scored on a groundout by Maddi Jonart.
Again, the Knights evened the score this time on a leadoff home run by Keira Babbitt over the center field fence in the third inning.
Butte High erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third, then, after Rian Ferriter set the Knights down in order in the fourth, exploded for 10 in the fourth.
Consecutive errors to start the bottom of the third put the Ferriter sisters on base with Gracie scoring on the one that got Rian to first. It gave Butte High the lead. Courtesy runner Sophie Radcliffe beat the throw to second off the fielded ground ball Madisyn Swanson hit and both were safe on the fielder’s choice. Ashby Lee drew a walk to force in a run and Ally Godbout hit a two-run single to left field. Drakos then cleaned the bases with her blast over the left-field fence. The Bulldogs had opened a 10-3 advantage.
After Rian Ferriter owned the Knights with a popup to her and two called strikeouts, Butte High came up with hot bats.
Bryn Godbout knocked a one-out single to center field. Walks to Lee and Ally Godbout loaded the bases. Drakos reached on an error and two runners crossed the plate. Ally Godbout was thrown out trying to get from first to third.  Jonart singled up the middle and continued on to third base when her hit got through the outfielders. Drakos scored on the error. Jonart sped home on a wild pitch. Then, continuing the inning, Leary drew a walk and Gracie Ferriter was hit by a pitch. Rian Ferriter creamed a pitch from Butte-rooted Maddy Petrino over left field for a three-run homer. Swanson drew a walk and the lightning delay stopped play.
When it resumed, Bryn Godbout walked and Lee singled home Swanson. Ally Godbout then singled to center to bring Bryn Godbout home. A popup ended the inning and Butte High had its 20-3 command, needing only three outs to end the game in the fifth inning.
Rian Ferriter finished off the Knights in order on a groundout, flyball to right and a strikeout.
The win moved the Bulldogs’ records to 2-10 for the season and 2-8 in conference games. They are to play a doubleheader against Missoula Sentinel on Monday at Stodden Park. The 3 p.m. Western AA game will be followed by a non-conference contest.
