Bruins claw Bulldogs to start Western AA softball play

By Bruce Sayler
Helena Capital left no doubt.
The Bruins hammered 14 hits in three innings and Butte High’s hustling Mattie Stepan tumbled over the right-field fence three times trying to catch three of them in a 15-0 Capital softball victory Thursday at Stodden Park.
The Bulldogs’ Western AA Conference opener ended after three innings on the 15-run difference rule.
“They hit the ball, don’t they?” commented Butte High head coach Ryan Stosich, indicating not a lot of dwelling on the loss was going to happen.
“We’ll flush this down the toilet and move on,” he said. “There’ll be better games.”
There might not be for the Bruins. Pitcher Kathryn Emmert struck out five batters, walked one and yielded four hits to the Bulldogs, shutting them out for three innings. The attack was led by No. 8 batter Riley Chandler with two home runs, both in the third inning, while driving in five runs. Ali Miller and Jolee Burgoyne socked two doubles apiece.
All of Butte High’s hits were singles – two by shortstop Kamber Leary and one each by catcher Gracie Ferriter and designated player Ashby Lee.
Capital took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Belle Glowacki whacked a one-out double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an infield fielding error.
The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the first with singles by Ferriter and Leary, but were foiled by a double play.
The Bruins plated four runs in the second for a 5-0 lead. Doubles by Miller and Burgoyne, and a two-run single by Taylor Sayers accounted for most of the damage. A throwing error added to Butte High’s troubles, playing only its second game this season.
Capital bats boiled in the third, though. All three of the Bruins’ home runs were crashed in the third – Chandler’s two- and three-run shots, and Kate Drynan’s three-run blast. All 10 runs in the inning were earned as Capital started with the first five batters banging out hits on the way to nine hits in the frame. Miller’s second double and a two-run base hit by Sayers were other big hits.
Ashlinn Mullaney absorbed the loss for Butte High. The Bulldogs are next scheduled to play on Saturday, at Helena High in a conference counter. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
