Broncs win rematch to advance to title game

By Derek Hendrickson

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Lady Broncs will have a chance to win a state championship on their home floor after knocking off defending state champion Havre 49-41 in the second semifinal Friday night.

The Lady Broncs advanced to their second straight title game behind Montana basketball and softball signee Taylor Goligoski’s 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Jaylee Albert and Kali Hayes both added 11 as the Lady Broncs avenged the 52-43 loss in last year’s championship played in Great Falls.

The Lady Broncs got off to a hot start hitting 3 triples to build an early 9-0 lead that they maintained at 11-2 after one.

Dani Wagner sparked a 9-0 Lady Blue Pony run to tie the game as she scored 6 points in the surge.

Havre took their first lead at 15-14 and the rest of half was back and forth with Hamilton taking a 22-20 edge to the break.

The Lady Blue Ponies took the lead at 24-22 when Morgan Mazurkiewicz hit for 3 of her game high 17.

Goligoski immediately answered with a 3 of her own to give Hamilton the lead back for good. The Lady Broncs ended the 3rd strong and took a 34-27 lead into the final frame.

Havre got back within 3 at 42-39 but down just one possession and 1:41 on the clock they decided to foul and Hayes drilled both ends of the one and one. Havre was not able to get back within one possession again.

The Blue Ponies will play Saturday morning against top ranked Columbia Falls who rolled Lewistown 71-31 Friday.

Hamilton will advance to the second all Southwestern Conference championship game of the school year as Dillon and Butte Central battled for the football title in November.

The Lady Broncs knocked Butte Central off last Friday in the divisional semifinal 66-58. The Lady Maroons were unable to overcome a slow start in that one and never led.

Hamilton is 2-1 vs. the Lady Maroons this year with each team defending their home court. Central will look to break that streak Saturday night with the Class A crown at stake.
