Broncs edge tired Butte High boys’ team

BILLINGS — The Bulldogs ran out of gas Saturday afternoon.

Playing in their second match in less than 24 hours, the Bulldogs saw Billings Senior’s Karson White score in the 77th minute in a 3-2 Broncs win.

“It’s a tough turnaround,” Butte High coach Eric Zahler said of playing West at home on Friday evening before a day match with the Broncs in Billings. “But as soccer players we should be able to handle that.”

The Bulldogs took the lead early when Brock Powell found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

After Senior’s Connor Hutchinson scored off a Jens Zimmerman assist tied the game at the 12-minute mark, Jacob Sholey turned a Travis Williams assist into a 2-1 lead at the 19-minute mark.

“We got off to that fast start we were looking for,” Zahler said.

Hutchinson’s second goal, this time off an Ethan Brown assist, sent the game tied at 2 into halftime.

That’s where it stayed until White finally got pasted a tired Bulldog squad.

Zahler praised the play of goalkeeper Jacob Williams, who notched 12 saves in the loss. He also had good things to say about his team as a whole.

“Just to see the heart they played with was impressive,” Zahler said.

Butte High, which fell to 1-4-1 overall and 1-3 in Eastern AA play, are back at home on Tuesday against Bozeman.
