The Butte High Bulldogs and Hamilton Broncs squared off Saturday afternoon with a lot riding on today’s game. Senior Derek Dunmire got the start on the bump.

Through the first 3 and a half innings it was a defensive showdown from both teams. Tocher Lee took a base on balls while Cayde Stajcar did the same thing at his at bat, sending Lee to third off a passed ball, and would bring up Bulldog catcher Quinn Cox to the plate. Quinn skyed a shot to center field deep enough to score Lee and the Bulldogs broke the ice with the first score of the game.

Hamilton would manufacture their own offensive inning their next at bat as Atticus Southwell roped one to center field, it was then followed by multiple ground balls and runners beating the play out at the bag and an overthrow to first led to the Broncs seeing two runs’ skate across the plate to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning.

Cayde Stajcar stopped the bleeding with a ground ball up the gut for the 6, 3, double play headed to the Dogs home half of the inning.

Matt Donaldson led off the home half of the inning for the Bulldogs but flew out to right center for the Broncs first out of the inning, followed by two more outs the next two batters and the lead stayed 2-1 after 4.

Hamilton’s 3rd baseman began the top half of the 5th inning with a solo shot to left field just as the wind died down to give the Broncs a 3-1 edge. Dunmire then hit the next batter and a timeout to regroup was taken by head man Jim Leprowse.

Hamilton found their stroke as the following batter hit a frozen rope to right center advancing runners to first and 3rd with nobody out. Dunmire made a great move to throw to Stajcar for the first out of the inning on a pick off, but the next pitch Hamilton belted another shot for the ground rule double driving in the run from 3rd to go up 4-1.

Hamilton continued to pour it on in the top half of the 5th blasting a shot to deep center field and driving in another run from second while doing so, 5-1 Broncs, leading to a pitching change for the Bulldogs as Gavin Trudgeon came in to relieve Dunmire. Dunmire tossed 4 innings, striking out 4, walking 3, giving up 6 runs, 5 earned, on 5 hits. Gavin came in and took down the first batter he faced on a pop out to the first baseman.

Hamilton hit another bloop shot in the wind and it dropped in for a single and another run as the Broncs scored 4 runs to take a 6-1 lead headed to the bottom of the 5th inning.

After a quick two outs for the Dogs, Stajcar found the running paths on his second base on balls leading to a Quinn Cox bloop shot for a single and RBI to cut the lead to 6-2 Broncs, pitching change Hamilton. Cash Lawrence gave up 3 hits, and 3 runs, one earned, he struck out 3 and walked 5.

Butte would manufacture another score off a bock and stolen base to send the runner home from 3rd and it was 6-3 Hamilton.

Butte would get two more runs and it was 7-5 heading into the top of the 7th inning, but off errors from shortstop and second baseman Cayde Stajcar and Tocher Lee the Broncs had men in scoring position, and off two singles the Broncs scored 3 more in the top of the 7th and the Bulldogs couldn’t find the bats in the home half of the 7th and fall to the Broncs 10-5.

Matthew Donldson, Lucas Harris-Huerta, Cayde Stajcar, Tocher Lee, Alex Jorgensen, Quinn Cox, and Logan Carden all recorded a hit at the plate. Zack O’connell and Cayde Stajcar reached base twice on bases on balls. The Bulldogs finished the game with 7 hits and 6 bases on balls.

Hamilton notched 9 hits in the game, Toby DeMoss and Atticus Southwell both had 2 hits apiece for Hamilton, and Jackson Lubke drove in 3 RBI’s.

Butte High will return to action next Tuesday vs the Florence Falcons with just two games remaining.
