HAMILTON — The Butte Central Maroons overcame a sluggish start Saturday afternoon and pulled away for a 53-36 Southwestern A win over the Hamilton Broncs.
Nate Bolstad led the Maroons with 20 points, who trailed 9-4 late in the first before going on an 18-0 run that took place over three different quarters.
Central held the Broncs scoreless in the second quarter while putting up 12 points themselves after scoring final four in the first. Hamilton finally broke through after BC got the first basket of the second half.
Despite the impressive run and the great defense Maroon Head Coach sees room for improvement on the offensive side of the ball.
“I just don’t think we ever got into a rhythm offensively,” Kelly said after the win.
The unofficial turnover count showed it was a sloppy game as the Maroons forced 24 Hamilton miscues but committed twenty of their own.
It turned out the best part of the Maroon offense was their defense. “I thought we did a nice job getting run outs, we were getting deflections and easy baskets,” Kelly said.
“To overcome our offense and win by 17 on the road says a lot about how we played on defense, I feel good about it,” Coach Kelly stated in regards to the overall performance.
Bolstad was joined in double figures by junior post player Marcus Ferriter, who chipped 10. Senior point guard Kale Guldseth poured in nine and junior swingman Dalton Sessions added 7 for the Maroons.
Hamilton did not see anyone register double digit points. They were led by sophomore Josh Heath and junior Ty Burt who both scored 7 in the loss.
The Maroons are now a perfect 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference.
They will back in action Thursday night at Dillon where they will play the Beavers for the first time since the triple-overtime thriller last year in the divisional semifinals.
