Dickinson State picked a pretty good time to win its first Frontier Conference volleyball match.

After going winless in their first season in the Frontier, Blue Hawks stunned Montana Western in the play-in match of the conference tournament tonight at the Montana Tech HPER Complex. The Blue Hawks won 21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-13, 15-11.

Melissa Avila led the way for Dickinson, tallying 16 kills. Ebony Sanders added 11. Brea Mitchell (17 kills) and Charelle Minor (16) led Western in the loss.

The Blue Hawks play top-seeded Lewis Clark State at noon Friday.

Montana Tech plays MSU-Northern at 2 p.m.
