Blue Devils outscore Maroons in hitfest

CORVALLIS – A 10-run third inning propelled homestanding Corvallis to a 16-12 hitfest victory over Butte Central Thursday in a Southwestern A Conference high school girls’ softball game.
The Blue Devils pounded out 16 hits with seven coming in the third inning.
Ava Loran slugged a two-run homer to straightaway center to highlight the big Corvallis inning.
Melanie Race pitched the win that raised the Blue Devils’ record to 3-2 for the season with all games being conference counters.
The game was only the second of the year for Butte Central, which fell to 0-2. Both losses were in conference games. The Maroons put up a heck of a battle though without having had the benefit of an outdoor practice due to wintry, snowy, cold weather plaguing the area this spring.
Senior shortstop Brooke Badovinac walloped a three-run homer while going 3-for-3, with a double and single, at the plate and driving in five runs batting out of the leadoff spot. She walked in her two other plate appearances. Senior pitcher Hattie Mehring was also 3-for-3 with a double and two singles, and senior first baseman Jaeden Berger knocked in three runs with a pair of singles.
BC senior catcher Mia Keeley hit a double and two singles, junior left fielder Kathryn Lalicker hit a single and freshman outfielders Arika Stajcar and Sophia Gelling each poked a base hit. Mehring, Stajcar and Gelling each knocked in a run.
Butte Central had a 2-1 edge after the top of the third inning, grabbing the edge on one-out doubles by Badovinac and Mehring followed by base hits by Keeley and Berger.
Corvallis then sent 16 batters to the plate in its half of the third inning while going ahead 11-2 and was able to fend the Maroons off the rest of the way.
The BC girls are to play Hamilton at 11 a.m. on Friday in Hamilton in another Southwestern A Conference tilt.
