CORVALLIS — Butte Central’s volleyball season is perfect no more.
The Corvallis Blue Devils overcame a 2-0 hole to beat the Maroons in five sets in a Southwestern A match Thursday night. The loss prevented the Maroons from clinching the conference regular-season crown.
BC won the first two sets 25-23, 25-13 before the Blue Devils stormed back to take the match 25-18, 25-20, 15-10. Butte Central fell to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
“We started off great tonight, taking two sets from Corvallis right off the bat,” Butte Central coach Becky Hancock said. “But I felt we let our guard down after those sets, and Corvallis took advantage. I never felt we gave up, but we struggled with Corvallis’s tough serving and hitting.”
Hannah Capko pounded 21 kills, and Taia Tulley collected 30 digs to lead the Blue Devils, who salvaged a split on the season series.
Teresa Piazzola’s 11 kills and 16 digs paced the Maroons. Emily St. John, who dished out 22 assists and tallied 16 digs, and Sierra Pica each smacked eight kills, while Ryan Trudnowski added five digs and four blocks.
Mollie Peoples led BC with 23 digs. Corbyn Holm collected 13.
“We fought, but just never got any momentum going on those last three sets,” Hancock said. “Corvallis out played us tonight. Tough game to lose, but it’s over and done with. All we can do now is focus in on what we need to do to finish out the season strong and on top.”
The Maroons are back in action Saturday when they take on old rival Anaconda in a 4 p.m. non-conference match at the Maroon Activities Center.
