HAMILTON — The Butte Miners opened the 2015 American Legion Baseball season with a pair of non-conference losses to the Bitterroot Red Sox Sunday.

Butte fell 6-5 in nine innings in the first game and 11-0 in five innings in the second.

Butte coach Jeff LeProwse praised the pitching of Kilian O’Leary, Jared Haran, Quin Sommers and Nate LeProwse in the opener. He said the Butte bats, however, struggled seeing live pitching for the first time.

In the second game, the Miners played some younger players to get them experience.

Butte is back in action next Sunday when they head back to the Bitterroot to take on the Bucs.

Red Sox 6, Miners 5 (9 innings)
Justin Horvath singled in Nate Loranger for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of a game scheduled for seven.

The run came after the Red Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

Butte took the lead with four runs in the first inning. The Miners added a run in the second.

Dylan McDonald singled and drove in two runs for the Miners. Zach Hart added a hit, while Marcus Madrazo and Ryan Moodrey each drove in a run.

Bret Huxtable doubled, while Loranger hit two singles for the Red Sox.

Kyle Norman struck out four and held the Miners to one hit in the second game. Joe Johnson, Kyle Crossman, Taylor Nixon and Billy Anderson doubled to lead the Red Sox 12-hit attack.

The Bucks scored five in the first and three in the second and third to take command early.

Tyler Ossello poked a single for Butte’s lone hit.
