Bison start fast, run past Butte High boys

GREAT FALLS — A slow start was too much to overcome for the Butte High boys’ basketball team Thursday night.

Great Falls High took the lead for good in the first quarter, and the Bison knocked off the Bulldogs 73-49. The game was the Eastern AA opener for both teams.

“We fought hard and competed again on the road,” Butte High coach Luke Powers said. “We lacked focus early in the game and struggled to get back within 10 points the rest of the way.

Blake Thelen scored 15 points to lead three Bison in double figures in the win. Kyle Torgerson added 14 points, while Kendall Kynett scored 12.

Kale McCarthy scored 13 points for Butte High, which scored more than half its points in the third quarter.

Clay Ferguson added 11, while Tommy Mellot scored 10. Butte High also got nine points from Trevyn Roth — on three 3-pointers — four from Kash Kelly and two from Jacob Olson.

“It was a 10-point game in the third, but we just didn’t have the energy to climb back in it,” Powers said. “We continue to show our youth early in games. However, we are improving and understand our goals are in front of us.”

The Bulldogs, who fell to 1-4 overall, play host to Great Falls Russell Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Butte Civic Center.

The Bison improved to 5-1 overall.
