Billings Central runs past young Maroons

There’s nothing like taking your final exam on the first day of class.

That was basically the scenario for the Butte Central girls’ basketball team Saturday at the Maroon Activities Center.

The ultra-young Maroons did a lot of things right in their first game of the season. The problem was the test was just too tough as BC fell 49-21 to Billings Central.

“Another week would have been nice,” Butte Central coach Meg Murphy said about preparing for the season opener. “Our kids played well. I’m not disappointed in any of them.”

Allie Lucas scored all of her game-high 15 points in the first half as the Rams, last year’s runners up at state, took control of the game early.

Justyn Juhl added nine points in the win, while Erika Kuehn and Mariah Wittman each scored eight.

Shelby Paffhausen, Sierra Pica, Emily St. John and Mollie Peoples each scored four points to lead the Maroons, who graduated seven seniors after last season. Teresa Piazzola scored three points, while Ryan Trudnowski tossed in two.

Chandra McCurdy, Rylee Green, Lacey McGree, Kate Ossello, Aiden Dennehy, Taylor Wahl and Courtney Thomas also played for the Maroons.

Murphy said the team, which didn’t score in the fourth quarter, struggled getting into the flow of the game.

“That’s part of us trying to learn,” she said. “Fourteen kids on the bench is a lot, and you’re trying to find kids.”

The Maroons play defending Class A state champion Laurel at 4:15 point Saturday at the Butte Civic Center.

Murphy said she likes her team’s chances in that game.

“Laurel lost a lot of kids,” Murphy said. “They’ve only got one kid back. They’ve definitely got some big kids, but I think we can compete.”
