OGDEN, Utah — The Big Sky Conference has selected the ROOT SPORTS football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Nov. 16. Sacramento State QB Garrett Safron is the Offensive Player of the Week. Southern Utah linebacker Matt Holley is the Defensive Player of the Week. UC Davis kicker Brady Stuart is the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Safron, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior from Santa Monica, Calif., compiled 596 yards of total offense and accounted for six touchdowns in Sacramento State’s 43-42 win over Portland State. Safron completed 34-of-50 passes for a school-record 554 yards with four touchdowns. He also rushed for 42 yards and two scores. He led the Hornets on an 85-yard drive and threw the game-winning touchdown with 30 seconds remaining. Safron’s 554 passing yards are the second-most by an FCS QB this season. His 596 set the school record, and are the fifth-most by a player in Big Sky history. He threw TD passes of 10, 78, 26 and 4 yards, and scored on runs of 1 and 16 yards. He set the single-game school record for completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns. This is Safron’s third ROOT SPORTS Player of the Week honors this season, and the fifth of his career.
Holley, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound junior from Las Vegas, Nev., recorded nine tackles and intercepted two passes in Southern Utah’s 22-14 upset of No. 8 Montana State. Holley’s first interception came in the second quarter to halt an MSU drive. Holley’s second interception in the fourth quarter came at the Montana State 18-yard line. He returned it 9 yards to set up a short touchdown run that put SUU up 22-7 with 5:11 to play. Holley tallied seven solo tackles and also had a pass breakup. This is Holley’s second ROOT SPORTS Player of the Week honor this season.
Stuart, a 5-11, 163-pound sophomore from Newhall, Calif., made a career-high four field goals and two extra points in UC Davis’ 34-18 win over North Dakota. Stuart connected on field goals of 18, 29, 32 and 35 yards, tying the single-game high in the league this season. Stuart had made eight consecutive field goals, and has 15 for the season. This is Stuart’s second ROOT SPORTS Player of the Week honor this season.
ROOT SPORTS, the official television partner of the Big Sky Conference, closes out its football coverage with a doubleheader this Saturday. No. 5 Montana travels to No. 13 Montana State. Coverage begins at Noon, Mountain. At 2:30 p.m. Pacific, No. 3 Eastern Washington plays host to Portland State. The games will be televised live on ROOT SPORTs, DIRECTV’s Audience Network Channel 101, and Dish Network Channel 102.
