Big inning, weather topples Miners at 3 Legends

Gusty wind, rain and a handful of mistakes sunk the Butte Miners Thursday night at 3 Legends Stadium.

The Helena Senators used a seven-run third inning to take command in a 14-6 Class AA Conference win over the Miners.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out. That game will be made up when the Senators come to town on June 26.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kash Kelly led off with a single and took second when Conner Miranda was hit by a pitch. After Monk Bugni advanced the runners with a groundout, Ryan Moodry grounded out to score Kelly.

Helena tied the game in the second when Tayler Carlson singled and scored on, off all things, a bases-loaded walk.

The Senators and the weather got to Butte starter Justin Summers in the third inning.

Wind whipping through the stadium, rain droops and crucial mistakes led to a perfect storm for the Senators in that inning. The big hit of the rally was a three-run double by Kadyn Cragle.

On a calm night, that hit would have been a pop out in the infield. The wind, though, moved the ball around and it bounced off an infielder’s head. With the runners off on contact with two outs, all three scored easily.

Helena added five runs in the fifth inning. Matt Krieger hit a two-run single, Carlson blasted an RBI double, and Ty McGurran drove in a run by reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Down 13-1, the Miners didn’t roll over. Brayden Klobucar singled and Scout Allen doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

Klobucar scored on a Kelly single, while Monk Bugni drove in Allen with a ground out. Kelly scored on a balk to cut the lead to 13-4.

After Helena tacked on a run in the top of the seventh, Butte picked up a pair on a single by Moodry in the bottom of the frame. The base knock scored Allen and Kelly. Allen reached on a walk, and Kelly singled.

The hit was Kelly’s third of the day.

Carlson went 4 for 5 with a double to lead the Senators, who sot seven strong innings from Brett Jacobs. He struck out three, walked two and scattered seven hits.

Hunter Bugni struck out for in relief for the Miners, who are back in action Sunday when they head to Lethbridge, Alberta, to take on the Elks in a league twin bill.

Butte’s next home game is next Wednesday when the Miners welcome Pocatello, Idaho, for a nine-inning game.
