PHOENIX — Sean Benson and the Montana Tech men’s golf team are sitting on top after the first day of the Frontier Conference Championships.
Benson, a senior from Billings, shot a 1-under-par 71 Monday on the Papago Golf Course. He holds a three-shot lead over four golfers, including Montana Tech sophomore teammate Sean Ramsbacher. (Men’s results, women’s results)
Carlos Davila of Lewis-Clark State College, Jonny Cielak of the University of Providence and Reece Nilsen of Rocky Mountain College are also tied for second at 74. Devin Bray of Lewis-Clark State and Devon Caruso of Lewis-Clark State are four back 75.
Tech and Rocky are tied for the lead at 302 with two rounds to play. Lewis-Clark State is six back at 308, followed by Providence at 314, Carroll College at 326 and MSU-Northern at 344.
Jimmy Amundson hit a 78 to open the tournament. Oredigger teammate Trey Hoagland shot 79, and Bridger Martin carded an 81.
On the women’s side, the Orediggers sit in third place at 373. Rocky leads the way at 324, while Lewis-Clark State shot 341. Providence is fourth at 376, followed by Carroll at 381 and Northern at 419.
Eryn Ellis of Rocky leads the way with a 77. She holds a one-shot lead over Lewis-Clark State’s Marissa Louder. Rocky’s Amanda Conner (81), Anna DeMars (83), Morgan O’Neill (83) and Hayden Flohr (84) round out the top six.
Tanna Campbell sits in 11th place with a 90. Teammate Lynzee Dexter is two shots back at 92.
Also for the Orediggers, Hailey Ogolin shot a 94, Kelsey Parker hit 97, and Ashton McCloskey carded a 99.
