Benson sits in second, Oredigger men third

BILLINGS — Montana Tech sophomore Sean Benson shot rounds of 72 and 70 Monday during the first round of the MSUB Yellowjacket Spring Invitational.

As a team, the Orediggers are in third place. Tech, which led after a first-round 293, shot 304 in the second round and takes a 597 score into Tuesday.

MSUB shot 296-281 for a 577 to take the lead. Rocky Mountain is second at 592. Carroll College is fourth at 614.

Rocky’s Michael Tait shot 71-67 on the par-72 course. His 6-under-par 138 is four shots better than Benson. Carroll’s Ben Gardner and MSUB’s Connor Miele are tied for three at 1-under 143.

Oredigger Dave Starcevich, a Butte High grad, sits in a ninth-place tie at 148 after hitting 73 and 75.

Tech’s Cole Noctor, a Butte Central grad, is tied for 14th at 151. He followed a 75 with a 76.

Oredigger teammate Ryan Keenan is one shot back at 152 after a 74 and a 78. Freshman Trey Hoagland, a Butte High grad, is tied for 22nd at 155. He hit 74-81.
