Benson, Oredigger men place third at MSUB Invite

BILLINGS — The Montana Tech men’s golf team returned from the MSU-Billings Yellowjacket Spring Invitational with a third-place finish at the Lake Hills Golf Course.

Sophomore Sean Benson placed third in the individual standings to lead the Orediggers, who shot 310 on Tuesday’s final round for a 907 three-round total. Tech shot 293 and 304 on Monday. (Leaderboard, Team-by-team scores)

MSUB won the tournament, carding a final-round 297 for an 874 total. Rocky Mountain College took second at 888. Carroll College placed fourth, seven shots behind the Orediggers at 914.

Rocky’s Michael Tait shot a 4-under-par 68 and claimed medalist honors at 206. He shot 71 and 67 on Monday.

MSUB’s Connor Miele placed second at 213 following a final-round 70. Benson checked in with 216 following Tuesday’s 74. He shot 72 and 70 on the first day.

Tech’s David Starcevich tied for 14th place at 227. He shot 79 on Tuesday. Also, Tech’s Ryan Keenan tied for 20th at 230, and Trey Hoagland tied for 24th at 234.

MSU-Billings also took the women’s title. The Yellowjackets shot 310 Tuesday for a 618 total. Rocky placed a distant second at 656. (Leaderboard, Team-by-team scores)

Montana Tech shot 357 and slipped to seventh place a 698. Tech was in fourth place at 341 after Monday’s first round

Gina Kowolchuk of the University of Great Falls topped the individual leader bard at 151. She improved three shots from Monday’s 77 for a 74 on Tuesday.

Rocky’s Eryn Ellis and MSUB’s Sammy Walter tied for second at 154 after hitting 77s each day.

Butte High graduate Shealyn Hafer, an MSUB sophomore, shot an 82 and tied for ninth at 159.

Taryn Campbell improved two shots for an 82 to lead the Orediggers at 166. She tied for 15th place. Megan Steach shot 85 and placed 20th at 172.

Also for the Orediggers, Lynzee Dexter hit 98 for a 179, and Hailey Ogolin shot 92 for a 181.

The tournament was the final tune up for the Orediggers before the Frontier Conference Championship, which is April 24-26 in Phoenix.
