Benson 9th, Ogolin 12th after first round at Frontier

TEMPE, Ariz. — Montana Tech freshman golfer Sean Benson shot a 78 Monday at the Karsten Golf Course to sit in a tie for ninth place after the first round of the three-day Frontier Conference Tournament.

Benson is four shots behind first-day leaders Taylor Noble of Rocky Mountain College and Casey Brown of Lewis-Clark State Colleges. The leaders shot a 3-over-par 74.

On the women’s side, freshman Hailey Ogolin, a Butte High graduate, carded an 88 and sits in 12th place. Kyla Clancy of Rocky Mountain College shot a 3-over 75 to take the first round lead. Teammate Eryn Ellis is three shots back at 79, while Lexi Pyette of Carroll College is third at 79.

The Rocky women lead the team standings after a first-round 325. Lewis-Clark State is next at 330, followed by Carroll College at 340, Montana Tech at 377, the University of Great Falls at 398 and MSU-Northern at 402.

Taryn Campbell carded a 93 for the Orediggers, while Megan Steach hit 95. Also for Tech, Butte High graduate Ashten McCloskey hit 101 and Kelly Harbach shot 113.

LC State leads the men’s race at 304. Rocky and Great Falls are tied at 309, followed by Carroll at 332, Tech at 337 and Northern at 373.

Sean Ryan added an 85 for the Orediggers, while Lee Paulson shot 86, Butte Central graduate Cole Noctor hit 88 and Butte High grad Dave Starcevich shot 94.
