DILLON — The arm and legs of Dillon’s Justus Peterson were too much for the Butte Central Maroon’s Friday night, leading the 2-1 Beavers to a 33-7 victory.
The senior quarterback for the Beavers was a one-man wrecking crew, throwing for 212 yards, including touchdown passes of 16 yards to Pete Gibson and 7 yards to Cooper Hoffman in the first half. Peterson also ran for two scores, a 15-yard run in the second quarter and a 2-yard sneak in the third quarter to cap the scoring.
Butte Central started the game strong, taking the opening kickoff 69 yards for the game’s first score. The Maroons used up seven and half minutes of the quarter. Egan Lester carried the ball nine times for 30 yards on the opening drive, and quarterback Thomas McGree carried six times for 11 yards, including the final 4 yards into the end zone for the Maroons only lead of the night. David Granell added the point after and the Maroon’s took the early lead 7-0.
The Beavers wasted little time to respond. With 39 seconds left in the first quarter, Peterson found Gibson out of the back field from 16 yards out for the Beavers first score. Jonny Reiser’s extra point tied the game at 7.
Dillon’s next possession started at their own 42-yard line and ended 12 plays later on a 14-yard touchdown run by Peterson. The extra point failed and the Beavers took the lead for good 13-7.
The Maroon’s opportunity to take the lead back before halftime ended with a Cole Johnston interception and return to Butte Central’s 34-yard line. The Maroon’s held on fourth down and 6 but could not get a first down and were forced to kick it back to Dillon. With 39 seconds to play in the half, Peterson found Cooper Hoffman for a 7-yard touchdown, the 2-point attempt failed as Braden Harrington sacked Peterson and the Beavers went to the locker room with a 19-7 lead.
The BC defense started the third by forcing the Beavers to three and out, and on the very first play of the second half McGree ran for 9 yards but lost the ball on the way down and it was recovered by Dillon on the Maroon 31-yard line.
Peterson wasted little time running 24 yards to the 3. He then handed it off to Michael Hupp for the Beaver touchdown to make the score 26 to 7 following Reiser’s kick. Dillon added another score with 7 seconds left in the third on a 2-yard quarterback keep by Peterson and the extra point by Reiser for the final score 33-7.
Both teams were plagued by penalties that took away big plays in the game. The Maroon’s turned the ball over three times with two fumbles and one interception. Dillon gave up one fumble that was recovered by Matt Simkins.
The 0-3 Maroon’s will return home next Friday night for Homecoming against the Corvallis Blue Devils.
