Beavers Dam Bulldogs for first loss of young season

Butte High hosted the Class A Dillon Beavers tonight at the Butte Civic Center in a boys and girls double header, Taylor Drakos got the scoring going for the Bulldogs off a nice find from Brit Stewart in the short corner for a nice little jump shot. Dillon pushed the pace early and played full court press right out of the gates. After a Sydney Peterson triple Cadence Graham found one herself, on the Bulldogs next possession Stewart found a rhythm jump shot from the left wing for two more, it was 9-8 Butte with just over 2 minutes to play in the first period.

Dillon continued to press out of their timeout but it didn’t phase the Bulldogs as they broke press and Stewart found Cadence Graham who canned another triple for the Dogs to push the lead to 4.

Kinzy Creighton would attack the bucket on the Beavers next possession and put in a layup for 2, 14-10 Butte with a minute left in the period. Butte would lead 17-13 after one.

Kenleigh Graham was relentless down low and on the break, she scored two quick ones for the Beavers as they tied it up at 19 apiece leading to a Bryan Arntson timeout with 6 to go in the half. Cadence Graham came out of the timeout and hit a deuce to put the Dogs back on top by 2, but Kenleigh Graham came right back down and laid it in for two, 21-21 with 4:50 to play.

 Kenleigh Graham continued her scoring as she took a heat check from the left wing a drilled it for 3 more for Dillon giving them a 5-point advantage, followed by a turnover by Butte Sydney Peterson drilled a triple of her own to stretch the Dillon lead to 8 with 3:39 in the first half.

After a lid was welded to the bucket in the 2nd quarter for the Dogs, Brit Stewart broke it loose completing the old fashioned 3-point play to cut the Beaver lead to 5. Hallie Fitzgerald had a great euro step through the key and laid it in for 2 more Beaver points to go up 7 with 2 minutes to play in the half, Kenleigh Graham subbed back in, and it didn’t take her long to start cooking again as she drilled another jumper for Dillon followed by a Sydney Peterson scoop and score for 2, 35-24 leading to a timeout Bulldogs.

Dillon would take a 35-26 lead to the half after a cold shooting quarter from Butte High.

Just like she did to start the game Taylor Drakos came out and drilled a jumper in the corner for two for the Bulldogs. Cadence Graham would then find Brit Stewart on a fast break and she laid it in for 2 more. The lid was off the bucket to start the second half as Taylor Drakos hit a nice little jumper from the elbow to cut the Beaver led to 3 at 35-32.

Sydney Peterson took a 3 ball from the right wing on Dillons next possession and drilled it to put the Beavers back up 6 with just over 5 to play. After great ball movement Brityn Stewart buried a corner triple of her own, 40-35 Dillon.  Dillon would push their lead to 10 off missed shots and turnovers but Ashlinn Mullaney drilled a 3 of her own to cut it to 7, but the Beavers stayed hot and pushed their lead back to 10 with just under 3 to play in the period, 48-38.

Brityn Stewart continued to shine for Butte as she hit another corner triple for Butte but the Dogs couldn’t get a defensive stop late in the quarter and Sydney Peterson continued to let it rain from long distance drilling a 3 ball with 7 seconds left and a 53-45 lead heading into the final frame.

Stewart drove the lane and was fouled hitting both her shots at the stripe but Josie Robbins came right back down and hit a jumper for 2 to extend their lead back to double digits, 58-46 Dillon.

Halle Fitzgerald got the ball low on the block and made a great post move for 2 more, leading to a Taylor Drakos bucket at the other end, 60-48 Dillon with 6 minutes to play in the game. Inconsistent shooting and turnover plagued the Dogs as the game continued, Halle Fitzgerald got a rebound off her own miss put it back up for two and the foul extending the lead to 64-48 after missing the and one free throw.

 Ashlinn Mullaney had no hesitation in her as she spotted up and drilled a triple from the left wing to cut the deficit to 13 with 3 left to play in the game. Halle Fitzgerald, Sydney Peterson, and Kenleigh Graham controlled the second half with their great offensive play and give the Lady Bulldogs their first loss of the season, 71-54.

The Bulldogs were led by Brityn Stewart who had 22 points, Cadence Graham had 8, Taylor Drakos had 6, Catherine Sholey tossed in 5, Dylan Bartoletti had 4 and Franki Salusso had 1 for Butte High.

Dillon was led by the three headed monster of Graham, Peterson and Fitzgerald as all three saw double figures in the scoring column, Halle Fitzgerald led the way with 23 points, Kenleigh Graham, had 18 and Sydney Peterson cashed in 16 points for the Beavers.
