Butte High’s volleyball team is in need of a closer.

The Bulldogs put up a solid fight against Billings West Friday night at the Ross J. Richardson Memorial Gymnasium. Butte High, though, couldn’t put the ball away when it mattered most, and the Golden Bears walked away with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 Eastern AA victory.

“They do compete well,” Bulldog coach Katrina Berg said of her Bulldogs. “They just have to learn they can finish it. They can’t let them score that many points in a row. They have to stop that.”

An untimely West run cost the Bulldogs in each set as the Bears showed off some power at the net.

West beat Butte High 44-23 in kills, and the Bears out-blocked the Bulldogs 6-5.

“They do have some big girls over there that block, but we’ve got to find a way to get around them,” Berg said.

Catherine Follett, a 5-foot-11 hitter put on a solid all-around performance to lead the Bears. She tallied 11 kills, three blocks and 15 digs.

Shauna Stene added eight kills and two blocks, while Madeline Dawson also killed eight for the Bears. West improved to 15-9 overall and 5-3 in conference.

Kira Mortenson’s six kills and four blocks paced the Bulldogs, who fell to 2-7 in conference and 2-11 overall.

Baylee Leary joined Mortensen with six kills, while Emma Field killed four, Cameron Cassidy put away three and Keeley Pochervina spiked two.

Pochervina’s 10 digs led the Bulldog backcourt, which also got seven digs from Brittney Tierney and six from Jenna Maroney.

Sidney Christie served up 11 assists, while Bethanney Foley registered eight assists.

The serving game was tremendous for the Bulldogs, who picked up eight aces compared to just two service errors.

“Our serving percentage was really great,” Berg said. “It was over 95 percent.”

Tierney served three aces to lead the Bulldogs. Foley and Maroney added two apiece, and Christie served one ace.

Butte High doesn’t have much time to stew over Friday’s loss. Mighty Billings Senior comes to town Saturday for a conference match. Varsity action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

“We’ve got to come out ready to play, and we’ve got to get the blocks,” Berg said. “We were able to stay close with them in two sets down there. Hopefully we can do the same.”
