Bears hold off Bulldog boys

BILLINGS — For the second time in less than 24 hours, Butte High’s boys’ basketball team dropped a close game in the Magic City.

Billings West outscored Butte High 13-7 in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon to turn back the Bulldogs 61-54 in an Eastern AA game.

“Two games in 20 hours is awfully tough,” Bulldog coach Luke Powers said. “The kids competed and again we gave ourselves a chance to win. We have to continue to work and stay positive, and the wins will start coming.”

After falling by one point to Billings Skyview the night before, the Bulldogs trailed just 48-47 after three quarters Saturday.

Then, the Bears took over.

Cade Tyson scored 15 points to lead four Bears in double figures. Jesse Owens tossed in 14, while Josh Erbacher scored 12 and Lucas Gibb scored 11.

Clay Ferguson poured a game-high 27 points to lead the Bulldogs. He hit 11 2-point shots and scored five points from the foul line.

Fellow senior Danny McCloskey added 10 points for Butte High, while sophomore Jake Olson score dnine points. Butte High got four from Tommy Mellott, three from Trevyn Roth and one from Kale McCarthy. Kash Kelly, Jake Vetter also contributed for the Bulldogs.

Butte High is back at home Thursday to take on Great Falls Russell at the Richardson Gym.
