BC volleyball team goes down fighting

FRENCHTOWN — Butte Central’s best wasn’t quite good enough Saturday.

The Maroons went down fighting at the Southwestern A District volleyball tournament, falling in a five-set thriller to host Frenchtown.

After the Broncs took the first game 25-23, Butte Central battle back to take a 2-1 lead with wins of 25-19 and 25-20.

Frenchtown pulled out a 26-24 victory in Game 4 before closing out the win with a 15-12 victory in the tiebreaker.

The loss means the Maroons will not play in the Western A Divisional tournament next weekend in Butte.

“We played the best volleyball we have played all year, exactly what you want from a team come tournament time,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “We just fell short in both games this weekend. Those games (the fifth game) are always hard to swallow when you don’t come out on top and it leads to the end of your season.”

Butte Central fell to Stevensville in five sets on Friday.

Cassidy Strizic tallied 10 kills, while Megan Michelotti spiked nine to lead BC’s attack.

Six Maroons reached double figures in digs,, with Sophia Burton leading the way with 20. Kassidy Criscuolo, who spiked six kills, dug 20.

Strizic (12), Emma Keeley (11), Zoe Sullivan (11) and Olivia Bolton (10) also hit double digits in kills as the Maroons scrambled to keep their season alive.

Bolton (19 assists) and Keeley (13) led the BC passing game. Keeley also served four aces in the match.

“My freshmen and sophomores have come so far this year and had a great tournament,” Hancock said. “That is all due to their seniors.”

The loss closes the prep volleyball career for BC seniors Olivia Bolton, Criscuolo, Michelotti, Sullivan and Chelsey McGree.

“I cannot speak highly enough of how my seniors lead by example and paved the way for these younger girls,” Hancock said. “These seniors took the underclassman under their wing and guided them to the team we became at the end. We never gave up and we never gave in.”

Hancock said it is hard to say goodbye to those seniors.

“The seniors laid the foundation for that, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group for those younger girls to look up to,” Hancock said. “Kassidy Criscuolo was so key for us this year and especially for us this weekend, coming in clutch when we needed her. Zoe Sullivan owned her own out there and has come so far as a player, while Megan Michelotti did an awesome job for us up at the net this year.”

“Olivia Bolton, no matter what position you give her, she gets it done and had a great career for us,” the coach continued. “No different for Chelsey McGree, who takes her role and makes us a better team no matter what it is. These seniors are truly a class act and are going to be missed.”
