Rain got the best of Butte Central and Stevensville during a Southwestern A tennis dual Saturday afternoon at Stodden Park.
Only five matches between the Maroons and Yellowjackets were finished before the skies opened up.
In the short time on the court, though, BC coach Becky Hancock liked what she saw from her Maroons in their final regular-season action.
“From the matches we did get in, the kids were playing well,” the coach said. “We had some pretty solid play from our No. 1 doubles teams on both sides today. Both coming back to win in the third set. That’s what you like to see heading into the post season next week.”
On the boys’ side, Drew Badovinac and Gage Guldseth teamed to take down Dominic Bridges and Dylan James 10-5 in a tie breaker.
Payton Hartwick and Sage Wall topped Megan Liedtka and Chloe Milsten in a 6-7 (10-12), 6-0, 10-8 on the girls’ side.
Maycee Anderson of BC fell in straight sets to Olivia Peretto at No. 1 singles. Central singles teammates Mollie Drew and Kate Johnston were rained out.
Drew’s match with Reese Styman at No. 2 singles was stopped in the middle of a battle. After falling 6-2 in the opener, drew battled back to win 7-5. She was leading 4-1 in the tiebreaker.
The BC doubles teams of Miranda Murray/Meredith Varady and Kate Johnston/Lucy Kelly were victims of the rain.
In boys’ singles, Janis Wingerath of Stevensville topped Nick Lester 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1.
Colvin Whitehair topped BC’s Patrick Stimatz 6-4 in the first set at No. 2. He was leading 3-2 in the second. Maddox Hulbert of Stevensville was leading Trevor Phillips, and Maroon Enrico Oriesek and Stevi’s Josh Ryker were just getting started.
At No. 2 doubles, Fenn Chimo and Angus Trangmoe topped BC’s Justus McGee and Coy Campbell. The BC duo got in some nice shots but fell in straight sets.
The Maroons will host the Southwestern A Divisional tournament, whch begins Wednesday in Butte.
